I definitely experience this every time. The first few weeks seem great. Then you've lost the water weight and it is like "now what?" Now, I've never reached a goal weight, so I can't really say what all the stages really are and really it probably varies from person to person. I've definitely stuck to this the longest I have ever and I'm happy to say that 5 1/2 months in I'm going strong!
Personally, I wavered in months 3-4. I don't know if it was added stress that I had been waiting for my bar results and starting a new job or what. But I definitely went a span of weeks only losing .4s and then I hit 20lbs and lost and gained and lost the same 2lbs for weeks. Somewhere in all that mess, something clicked and I decided how much I really wanted this. I really examined what I had been doing during those months and made changes. Sure, I'd love to be losing quicker, but hey I'm not that lucky! I'll take what I can get.
Thinking about this reminded me of a hilarious episode of "Modern Family" and if you don't watch that show you should definitely check it out!
Let's face it - sometimes when you are dieting you go through some craziness.
This clip was not easy to track down (youtube disappointed me), but you can find it here if you haven't seen the clip before.
Here are Cam's stages of dieting:
1. The Clean Sweep
Removing any and all junk food. Completely cleaning out the kitchen and throwing everything away!
2. Attack Mitchell
If you haven't seen the show, Mitchell is Cam's partner. Stage 2 is attacking people close around you. Snapping at people and just in general being emotionally all over the place.
3. Soap Actress
Being completely over dramatic!
4. A Rush of Epiphany
Making statements like "I don't need food!"
5. Despair
In a slump, no emotional reaction to anything.
6. Rage
Well, this one is self-explanatory
7. Un-hinged?
You've lost it.
And Beyond
I just think the show is so funny and when I saw this episode and the sub-plot on dieting it cracked me up, but it is also true! The thing with all these stages is that he was also doing a juice fast. Now, I'm not knocking any diets, you do what works for you and what you and your doctor decide, but in my opinion diets that are very drastic and super restrictive sometimes have this cycle where you are good then you become unhinged and then gain it all back. I know I've gotten to the stage of completely unhinged before (and maybe slightly crazy). Now I can laugh about it. I think you have better odds of keeping yourself, and your emotions, in check when you follow a healthy eating plan that is balanced.
What do you think? Do you have a normal stages of dieting you go through? How will you overcome them to reach your goals?
. . .
On and unrelated note, I switched to blogger from wordpress and on wordpress you reply to people by responding directly to their posts and they are notified. Here, I've realized that people aren't notified when you respond to their comments on posts. Sorry about that! I will respond to everyone's comments via email so feel free to comment and ask any questions you want and I will respond as soon as I can :) If you have been commenting, thank you! I have been responding, but directly on the posts.
. . .
Lastly, If you haven't already entered the giveaway you can do so here!
I hate that they're not notified when you respond. You'd think they would fix that. I mean as bloggers we're notified when someone leaves us a comment, you'd think they could do it the other way around as well. Anyhoo, love your phases. I'm still in the honeymoon phase, which I'm sure I will fall quickly out of when the scale doesn't cooperate. Isn't that terrible? We're slaves to that stupid piece of metal!!
ReplyDeleteI've responded to you by email, but I wanted to post a response in case this quote helps anyone else. This may be my favorite dieting quote and it is from the book "Finally Thin" that I'm giving away:
Delete"The scale can't measure your will, your drive, how much time you put into your food plan, or how many temptations you said no to. It can't tell how many old habits you broke or new, healthier habits you started. It doesn't know the effort you put in at the gym , and it doesn't care. It won't heap praise on you because you chose the stairs over the elevator or know that you passed on a slice of a colleague's birthday cake even though you wanted it with all your heart.
Most of all, the scale doesn't have any idea how hard you're trying, or how many times you overcame a slip and got back on track when you felt like giving it all up together. Only you know that.
Every time you get on the scale, take a minute to measure what's really important especially your behavior and your effort. We all get zapped by the scale from time to time. It's inevitable. But even if you feel as if the scale gave you a D for weight this week, give yourself an A for effort when you've had a fabulously successful week. I promise you, that effort will show up at the scale eventually."
I think I'm slowly exiting the honeymoon phase lol....I may be on my way to "Attack Mitchell" lol :)
ReplyDeleteHi Katie - new follower here! I'm also on my own weight loss journey and I'm excited to be following along with you for encouragement and support. Check out my blog if you have a second. I'm only on week 3 of my new lifestyle change but it's working! Congrats on your 30 lbs lost! That's a great achievement.
ReplyDeleteHey Katie,
ReplyDeleteJust recently started following your blog and I love your motivation and inspirations. I'm about 1.5 years into my weight loss journey, and let's just say.... It hasn't been easy but it's the best decision I ever made. I was in honeymoon phase for about 3-4 months, left it (I guess during a slight plateau), and went right back in.
I've learnt a lot during my journey and if ever need any help, just send me an email :-)
Hi Katie! I'm just about 8 months ahead of you in my journey and I have to tell you that I've gone through a lot of those stages (BTW, MF is seriously one of my all-time faves!). I keep reading about and actually know of some folks who, in the same amount of time as me, have lost 70-90lbs, where I've only lost 46. The last 5 months have actually been the biggest struggle and in that time I've only lost THREE pounds. I haven't, thankfully, gained, but I just sit here at the same weight week after week, no matter what changes I make. It is extrememly hard not to ask myself what the heck I'm doing wrong or get frustrated, because if you knew me, you'd know that I'm a gym rat and I log every single thing I eat. I have a huge support system including my hubby and when I get down, they are there for me telling me to just keep doing what I'm doing. I love channeling Dorey (you know from Finding Nemo ;)) Just Keep Swimming. It's all I can do because I know it's the RIGHT thing to do :) The good news is that you're not alone and we're all headed in the same direction!
ReplyDeleteThis cracked me up! I do believe dieting phases exist, and I have honestly been through them all, as I've done every diet known to man.
ReplyDeleteIdeal Protein made me the most crazy. It was so extreme that it gave me mood swings, it made me cry, it made me lash out at my husband for eating totally normal food I had to give up. SO not worth it, and I gained all but 3 of the pounds I lost, back.
This will sound cheesy and preachy but the only "diet" that hasn't made me completely nuts is counting calories, making better choices and still allowing some wiggle room. I don't feel deprived or jealous of others eating crap. And the results make me happy, not crazy! Imagine that lol
I am going to have watch the clip later but you summarized it great!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yeah check it out later for a laugh. That show is hilarious! Is your email linked? I don't think I was able to reply via email to you.
DeleteKTJ,
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower of yours and I just wanted to let you know that I think its great that you're blogging about your progress! I am a twenty-something attorney as well who is following Weight Watchers! I have 90-ish pounds to lose so I can really relate to your journey!
Hi! I tried to email you, but I don't think your email is linked :(
DeleteAnyway-
Wow it does seem like we are similar then. I'm 26 and just finished law school in June and took the July bar so I'm a new attorney. So glad that I never will have to take another bar exam!
Do you have a blog also?
haha! That is seriously one of my favorite MF episodes, mainly because I can totally relate!!!!! Love your blog...you and me have lots in common! Like the never reached a goal weight before...we're gonna do it this time, girlfriend!
ReplyDeleteI love Modern Family! Cam's diet stages are hilarious. I've tried not to make a clean sweep this time. I'm trying to not be in this for all or nothing and take it one step at a time. My hubby hopes I skip step 2 :)
ReplyDeleteJust started following you! Fellow attorney in VA, just had a baby 2 months ago, so I have between 40-50 to lose. Thanks for the inspiration and goos luck on your journey!
ReplyDeleteHi! Congratulations on your new baby!!! Your email wasn't linked so I couldn't respond to your through there. Thank you so much for commenting and following!
DeleteNew reader and follower!
ReplyDeleteNice to read from others facing the same struggles
I blog too....here's hoping you share the follow!

The last few months have been a huge struggle for me. I'm slowly getting back into it, but it's so tough sometimes!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny because a couple months ago I switched from Blogger to Wordpress. There's things a like and dislike about both, but I felt swayed by a lot of other Bloggers to go with Wordpress.. not sure I should've or not though.
It is tough, but we can do this!
DeleteIn regards to blogger v. wordpress, I think it is all a personal preference. I find it easier to connect with people on blogger using gcc, but like you said there are positives and negatives to both.
I love that show...and this post. I think I'll share it on my fb!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I love Cam! And that clip totally cracked me up when I saw it. It is so true. I just found your blog through Mama Laughlin and Ohhhh am I glad I found it! I am beginning my weight loss journey using BeachBody programs. I can't wait to see how this goes for both of us! Subscribed :)

ReplyDeleteYou are so funny! I really enjoyed this post and know exactly what you mean. From October to mid December, I lost and gained the same four pounds, after the new wore off. Here's to getting fired up all over again!
Yes, we will do this!
DeleteHaha ~ That's hilarious! I think I am constantly in the Rage stage! At least I want to believe that I am. LOL

I believe this 100%, I've been doing this for 16 months and a loss of motivation will happen. You may gain some weight at times (I know I did). But the point is that you don't give up, just keep pushing on. :)
