I made an appointment with a personal trainer yesterday and went for an introductory meeting and fitness test.
Previously I've been of the mindset that I'm too fat for a gym. I'm too out of shape and will just make a fool of myself. So, has my mindset changed? Well, not really. My meeting was at a privately owned gym and there aren't other classes going on at the time so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. However, I am working on the whole "who cares what other people think" thing too. I don't know why I'm concerned about people seeing me at the gym when it clearly shows and effort to be healthier, but I do. I think it is just because I feel so out of shape!
I was happy with my meeting though. I received some great advice as for things to look for and questions to ask from you lovely people, so thanks to all who gave me advice!
The trainer was really nice and she talked to me for awhile in her office going over past activities and health concerns and all that. She explained her philosophy, asked me how I was personally motivated, what I wanted to get out of it all, specific goals, etc. She had a very bubbly and happy personality and from her talking about everything I could tell that she really loves her job and she seems very knowledgeable.
The other part of the meeting was a fitness test so that she could gauge my fitness level. I was worried about this and got in my head again about the potential for embarrassment and she said something that is so true and that I so needed to be reminded of and that is that everybody has to start somewhere.
The fitness test included seeing how many push-ups I could do in 30 seconds and I can tell you that I learned that I can't do many! Of girl push-ups I maybe did 8 correctly going down as far as she wanted. Then we did crunches for a minute, followed by a 3 minute step test and then checked my heart rate.
She recorded everything and said that she likes to create a binder for each client so we can better track progress. I also filled out some forms with a bunch of info that basically encompassed the majority of our discussion in her office about my goals and such. She then said she would review everything and design an hour workout based on everything.
So I've committed. I will be going to my first session with her on Tuesday. We will see how this goes!

Now on to this weeks Pit(s) and Peak(s):
In no particular order:
Pits:
1. The cold! It is freezing. I know it is January and all, but can it please be summer now?
2. The Pens lost their home opener :(
3. I had major snacking issues this week. I wanted to munch on everything and I'm pretty sure I've gained a little as of now. Hoping I can get back on track for an ok weigh in Sunday.
Peaks:
1. I went down a clothing size!
2. I've connected with some great other bloggers more on my new facebook group! You can request to join here.
3. I co-hosted my first blog linkup celebrating non-scale victories!
4. JT came out with a music video! I'm not loving the song, but it is nice having him make music again. If he tours, you bet this girl will be in line waiting for tickets.

And Again I am up way too late - stupid school :) I just requested to join your group on Facebook - so excited :) And I will be linking up with you tomorrow also - my brain quite simply cant function any more on writing a blog post :) I will do it tomorrow morning! Happy Friday :)
ReplyDeleteI used to be a very diligent gym-goer (and am once again...) and one thing I've noticed is that everyone is pretty much focused on themselves in the gym. I am too busy trying not to die to notice anyone else! :-)
ReplyDeleteCongrats to you for signing up at the gym! 8 girl push-ups are great! When I first started, I couldn't even do one!
ReplyDeleteWe all have to start somewhere! Figure I can only get better from here :)
DeleteI have never been a member of a gym but I use our community one when my son is swimming. I think you have taken a step in the right direction. It will defiantly push you. Have fun with it
ReplyDeleteIt is WAYYYYYY too cold! we are expecting some wintry weather this afternoon and I'm not in the mood at all! Congratulations on going down a clothing size! That is amazing Katie :) Can't wait to work with you for the March Mixer Extravaganza!

New follower here. Just wanted to say hi, and good luck with your fitness goals. I'm working on my own. I've woken up early and exercised every morning since December 31. Hoping to make it through 90 days, and then have a solid workout habit established.

My parents have a full gym at their house! crazy right...I should be skinny! but the truth is, I don't know what I'm doing! I do cardio at my house...but when I go over there I'm a little overwhelmed! Where do I start? and that's great for you! Enjoy that trainer! That is awesome!
ReplyDeleteWay to go! I'm so glad you did it! Can't wait to hear how the first real "workout" goes with the trainer. Keep us posted. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I definitely will be updating :)
DeleteHi Katie- just found your blog and was inspired to comment! I am an attorney living in Columbus so I know how hard it can be to make your health a priority when you're new to a demanding job. I started working out with a trainer last year and it made a HUGE difference. It helped me get back in the habit of working out and made me feel more comfortable at the gym, so good for you! Also, FYI - you should never feel uncomfortable going to the gym. Everyone there is just focused on themselves, trying to get in and out and on with their lives! Can't wait to follow your journey :)
ReplyDeleteHi! Nice to meet you! Thanks for sharing and following! Columbus isn't too far away either :) I'm glad you've had such a positive experience with your trainer! I hope my experience goes well!
DeleteYay for going to the gym! I'm excited to hear your progress as you move along this next part of your journey. :)
ReplyDeleteSo excited that you joined!! I hope you learn to love it; I truly do, isn't that weird?? My favorite workouts are Zumba and SheBam, but I also love Body Pump. If I can't catch a class, I like to do intervals on the treadmill, where I walk for a bit and then jog for a bit. I have to tell you that I never, NEVER, ever thought I'd be a "jogger"...but when I look at my heart rate monitor at the end of those workouts, I'm like "Yehaaaww!" It really ups your burn :) And that's another thing that helped my gym workouts: having a heart rate monitor...it's awesome to see in NUMBERS how much you burned and it's much more accurate than the machines. So proud of you, Katie!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job committing to the gym, if I could afford it, I would be going as well. Like you said, everyone has to start somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThat is so great that your WENT to the gym and started yourself on the process of adding exercise to your journey. It is definitely a scary place. I live in a relatively small town so my gym is full of those same gym class hero's I was intimidated by in high school. I rarely go (I'm lucky enough to have a workout room at my house) but when I do it is always with a friend or co-worker. It helps keep the distraction off of (what I assume are) people staring at me. Congrats on it! It is a huge accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is very lucky that you have a gym in your house. That is very convenient!
DeleteI am so proud of you for getting out of your comfort zone and taking charge. I went to a Zumba class last night and was scared to death. I was afraid I would look out of place. But I am losing weight and getting fit for me, no one else. I am so happy to be a sponsor!
ReplyDeleteIt just annoys me when I see how narrow-minded some people are. They judge you when they see you on the street. And they look in a superior way at you when they see you trying to make an effort. So the lesson is that people will comment no matter what. If you are fat, if you are skinny they say that they don't see why you are working out. The healthiest way for you is to keep your eyes on what you want to accomplish and never look right or left until you get what you worked for.
ReplyDeletehugs and kisses
Love, Andreea!
Good for you for getting a trainer! I think that is awesome and will help you get where you wanna be. I have wanted to do the mini-personal training sessions that Planet Fitness offers just so I know how to utilize the WHOLE gym, but I'm definitely too nervous. But I think I'll take a lesson from you and just do it!
ReplyDeleteHi Katie! Thanks for the follow. I'm following back. I love your blog. I am trying to lose weight myself. It helps to know people are strugglijg right along with you. Thanks! Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteHey lady! So let mw just tell u that me and all my 200 plus pounds of glory are in the gym and who cares what people think. I also wear wore out 3 year old capris and the Mr.'s t shirt. Can we say hot mess?!?!?!?! But who cares I have goals!!!! So get on in there and have no fear. I'm so proud of your loss so far. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on going down a clothing size. That's one thing I am looking forward to like a lot with weight loss. Need to get going so I can get new clothes in smaller sizes! Or at least making the clothes I have fit better.
ReplyDeleteI just recently joined a gym also. I am actually quite intimidated walking in. And making myself actually walk in is still a small internal challenge. But I'm very motivated once I'm there. Seeing these cute fit women there pushes me and motivates me more. I want to work harder to get to that cute fit healthy body again! Remember this "Sweat out the bad, leave only the good." That always makes me smile. Get stronger girl you got this!
